    3-D Center-Weighted Vector Directional Filters for Noisy Color Sequences

    This paper focuses on a noise filtering in color image sequences, where a new class of center-weighted vector directional filters is provided. According to high dimensionality of color image sequences, where besides the spatial frequencies in the frames it is necessary to consider the temporal correlation of an image sequence and the correlation between color channels too, the processing of color image sequences represents very important and interesting problem. Clearly, the color image sequences represent three-dimensional (3-D) vector-valued image signals and thus, the 3-D vector filters provide optimal approach, only. Novelty of this paper lies in the impulse noise suppression by a new class of center-weighted vector directional filters, where the influence of the filter parameter to filter performance is analyzed. The interesting behavior of a new filter class is illustrated by a number of experimental results and comparisons with the well-known filtering algorithms for color image sequences

    Performance of Basic Vector Directional Filters According to Used Angle Distance

    Color images are typical examples of vector-valued signals. For that reason, vector processing represents an optimal approach. Although widely used vector filter is a vector median based on a reduced ordering, the directional processing with utilizing of the angle between input vectors can be used, too. By this way can be achieved well estimates, since vector directional filters preserve color chromaticity, whereas vector median filters may not satisfy this requirement.     Improved Depth Map Estimation from Stereo Images based on Hybrid Method

    In this paper, a stereo matching algorithm based on image segments is presented. We propose the hybrid segmentation algorithm that is based on a combination of the Belief Propagation and Mean Shift algorithms with aim to refine the disparity and depth map by using a stereo pair of images. This algorithm utilizes image filtering and modified SAD (Sum of Absolute Differences) stereo matching method. Firstly, a color based segmentation method is applied for segmenting the left image of the input stereo pair (reference image) into regions. The aim of the segmentation is to simplify representation of the image into the form that is easier to analyze and is able to locate objects in images. Secondly, results of the segmentation are used as an input of the local window-based matching method to determine the disparity estimate of each image pixel. The obtained experimental results demonstrate that the final depth map can be obtained by application of segment disparities to the original images. Experimental results with the stereo testing images show that our proposed Hybrid algorithm HSAD gives a good performance

    Free atmospheric CO2 enrichment increased above ground biomass but did not affect symbiotic N2-fixation and soil carbon dynamics in a mixed deciduous stand in Wales

    Through increases in net primary production (NPP), elevated CO2 is hypothesizes to increase the amount of plant litter entering the soil. The fate of this extra carbon on the forest floor or in mineral soil is currently not clear. Moreover, increased rates of NPP can be maintained only if forests can escape nitrogen limitation. In a Free atmospheric CO2 Enrichment (FACE) experiment near Bangor, Wales, 4 ambient CO2 and 4 FACE plots were planted with patches of Betula pendula, Alnus glutinosa and Fagus sylvatica on a former arable field. Four years after establishment, only a shallow L forest floor litter layer had formed due to intensive bioturbation. Total soil C and N contents increased irrespective of treatment and species as a result of afforestation. We could not detect an additional C sink in the soil, nor were soil C stabilization processes affected by FACE. We observed a decrease of leaf N content in Betula and Alnus under FACE, while the soil C/N ratio decreased regardless of CO2 treatment. The ratio of N taken up from the soil and by N2-fixation in Alnus was not affected by FACE. We infer that increased nitrogen use efficiency is the mechanism by which increased NPP is sustained under elevated CO2 at this site

    Periodic Pattern Detection for Real-Time Application

    Abstract. Digital video stabilization approaches typically degrade their performances in presence of periodic patterns. Any kind of matching between consecutive frames is not usually able to work in presence of these kind of signals: the motion estimation engine is deceived and its performances degrade abruptly. In this paper we propose a fast fuzzy classifier able to recognize periodic and aperiodic pattern in the images that takes into account the peculiarities of digital video stabilization.     Impulsive noise removal from color images with morphological filtering

    This paper deals with impulse noise removal from color images. The proposed noise removal algorithm employs a novel approach with morphological filtering for color image denoising; that is, detection of corrupted pixels and removal of the detected noise by means of morphological filtering. With the help of computer simulation we show that the proposed algorithm can effectively remove impulse noise.     Label-Free Proteomics Approach Characterizes Plasma Protein Signature of Donor Brain Death

    Purpose Despite recent advances in donation after circulatory death, transplants from brain-dead donors remain the sole source in heart transplantation (HTx) worldwide. Due to organ shortage, marginal donors are increasingly used and the utilization of transplants becomes markedly more challenging. They undergo invariably brain death that induces a systemic cytokine and catecholamine storm that lead to systemic inflammation, labile hemodynamics, and organ hypoperfusion. Together, these can damage the heart and aggravate later occurring graft injury, and ultimately, compromise graft function. However, the effect of donor brain death on allografts is not well understood. Methods In a separate prospective, blinded single-center trial, we collected donor plasma samples and relevant clinical patient data from 50 HTx brain-dead donors and as controls plasma samples from age- and gender-matched 23 healthy volunteers. Quantitative label-free proteomics in high definition MSE mode (HDMSE) was carried out on the samples. Various statistical analyses were performed on quantitative proteomics data to obtain the most reliably distinguishing proteins, which classify the donors vs controls.     Effect of Donor Simvastatin Treatment on Gene Expression Profiles in Human Cardiac Allografts during Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury

    Purpose Numerous studies have shown that statin therapy initiated early after heart transplantation has beneficial effects on the development of cardiac allograft vasculopathy. Recently, we were able to show in a randomized clinical trial that simvastatin treatment of brain-dead donors conditions the heart transplant to withstand ischemia-reperfusion injury and to reduce the need for rejection treatments early after transplantation. In this study, we analyzed myocardial gene expression profiles in cardiac allografts after donor simvastatin treatment. Methods 84 heart transplant donors received 80 mg of simvastatin via nasogastric tube (n=42), or no treatment (n=42) in a prospective, double-blinded randomized controlled trial. Transmural Tru-Cut biopsies were taken from the apex of left ventricle of the donor heart immediately before reperfusion and 1 hour after reperfusion. 20 heart biopsies from donors without treatment and 20 heart biopsies from donors with simvastatin treatment will be analyzed with RNA sequencing. Results The preliminary analysis of RNA sequencing data from myocardial biopsies revealed altogether 137 significantly differentially expressed genes in all pairwise comparisons. The overall biological functions of these genes were related to gene ontology terms such as response to toxic substance, leukocyte migration, neutrophil mediated immunity, response to lipopolysaccharide, and response to oxidative stress. At the KEGG pathway level, our results indicated alterations in IL-17, TNF, MAPK and the AGE-RAGE signaling pathways. Conclusion We have shown in previous studies that donor simvastatin treatment induces protective effects against IRI in heart transplant recipients. In this study, we were able to detect significantly differentially expressed genes related to effects of simvastatin treatment. In order to single out genes that show beneficial effects of simvastatin treatment, further analysis will be conducted by exploring gene expression changes in specific biological functional categories, such as interleukin signaling and neutrophil degranulation.
